Ranked from FEMA National Risk Index

Highest Expected Disaster Loss per Household in Tennessee

FEMA publishes an expected annual loss for every county, but the raw figure tracks how much there is to lose, so a national list of it is really a list of large metros. Dividing by occupied housing units gives the number an individual owner can use. Expected annual loss is FEMA's National Risk Index figure for the county, divided by the number of occupied housing units the Census reports there. It is an actuarial average, not a forecast for any one year.

Where does yours land? Every county in America is somewhere on this scale, including the one you live in.

Every figure is modelled on the county's own median home with 20% down at 7.03%. Property tax and electricity are county and state specific; homeowners insurance uses the NAIC average premium for that state, which ranges from 0.16% of home value in Hawaii to 1.16% in Oklahoma. Maintenance and water are national estimates. Full methodology.
